I've always had a special fondness for maps and atlases.
Map design is one of the many reasons I wanted to do graphic design.
Maps have so much information in one place, and are usually clearly organized and composed of many layers. A combination of routes, text, symbols, scale, sites, geographic entities, and possibly a legend, all in one design. Colors and shapes are used to encode much information into one quickly decipherable image. Having an engineering background helps me to organize all this information, and present it in a systematic manner.
Transit maps are especially interesting. They have many features beyond those of road maps: schedule, fare and accessibility information, stations, transfer points and zones, and connecting system data.
Maps are at the edge of design and functional communication. They must be usable almost immediately, but must be attractive and well-organized. They can be accurate (in the geographic sense), or highly stylized to emphasize topology over measurement.
